Bird watching:

Guatemala counts with over 700 registered birds’ species, 35 of them are endemic regional species (located between the frontiers of Guatemala and Mexico).

Also we counted on 40 approximated species that only can find in Central America and Guatemala is the perfect destination to observe the bigger population as possible.
The destinations where you observe these birds are located at places with strong cultural contents where the visitor in addition to observe birds has opportunity to interact with Mayan cultures, visiting their marketplaces and knowing their habits.

Good reasons for birds’ observation in Guatemala:

Birds’ diversity

Guatemala it has over 700 birds’ species at a territory 85 times as much small as United States (of the size of Ohio or England). Like comparison, the united States have around 800 registered species.

Endemism of birds

Guatemala has endemic regional birds’ bigger population of nuclear Central America (south of Mexico and Guatemala). Horned Guan, Azure rumped Tanager and the Pink headed Warbler between the most recognized.

Migration through the Central American isthmus

In the migrant season, the warblers largely distributed in North America ( Canada, Alaska and United States ) move over through the continent to South America. The isthmus simulates a funnel and congregates the species in a small area and all of them can be seen foraging together.
The great difference between the reproductive areas in North America and of feeding in winter in Central America, increase the density and still the more rare species can be seen easily.
Still more interesting, species that migrant on the ocean (like the Cerulean warbler), they touch at Guatemala before departing again toward South America.

Ecosystems

The diversity of ecosystems has generated, along of million years of evolution, thousands of species, many of them endemic of the country.

In order to be meeting place of two continents, here many further species of the north hemisphere in its range of distribution find themselves South, and of the southern hemisphere in his northernmost range.

Guatemala has been identified as part of the rich points of the further planet in biological diversity, and that at the same time it’s consider highly threatened.

Worldwide, the country locates within the named bioregion Mesoamerica itself, which possesses a geography and varied climate, as well as a great quantity of biomes, 20 zones of life and 33 eco regions.

For its position in the planet, Guatemala has some characteristics that they do that have a great natural richness:

It has two marine coasts, located at the region of the Atlantic and the Pacific.

It has freshwater bodies: 7 lakes, 365 lagoons and 770 lagunetas.

It has different reliefs, from very flat places like the coasts to very high places, like the volcanoes. 37 volcanoes exist at the country.

The different reliefs, water bodies and characteristics like temperature, humidity and precipitation, gives as a result a variety of ecosystems, that can be classify in 7 biomes, 14 eco regions and 14 zones of life.

The country also counts on a great cultural wealth. Count with 4 cultures: Maya (with 22 linguistic communities), garífuna, xinca and Ladino; that they interact of different form with nature. This aspect, also the fact that the country be diverse does. (CONAP)

Standing out is La Antigua Guatemala historical city, declared city humanity's cultural patrimony by UNESCO, in 1979, an artistic colonial legacy's jewel, whose ensemble is a monumental museum.

There will be a procession of religious icons, and people dressed in purple frocks walk the streets as a testament of their faith. This will surely give you a taste of Guatemalan culture.

4.) Dead-ly festivities

If the rest of the world celebrates spookiness during Halloween, Guatemalan's hold festivities for their dead on the anniversary for the dead, November 1. They flock to cemeteries with flowers and candles, donning skeleton costumes, presents and even skulls. As such, this has also become an event that a visitor must see.

5.) Antigua

Perhaps due to the numerous earthquakes and natural calamities that this city has withstood, these natural events only ended up adding to the quaintness and beauty of Antigua. Don't miss out its beautiful ruins, old churches, cobble-stoned streets, horse-drawn carriages, and a whole list of beautiful architectural structures. Pictures taken here are postcard perfect.

The best part about museums here in Guatemala is that they have a showcase of some of the world's greatest and oldest archeological finds in the region. They also have on display Guatemalan art pieces that depict the country's culture and history. These museums are a must-visit for any visitor.

9.) Lake Atitlan

People who have sailed its waters all agree that this is one of most amazing and breathtaking lakes they have ever sailed on. Here, you will experience the serenity of its neighboring Mayan settlements. So, you will definitely want to include this in your itinerary.

10.) Town of Santiago
One good reason to visit this small Mayan town is the legend that precedes it.
